Thinking of replacing your system with a faster server ?
Sometimes it’s not the server that needs to be replaced but how the server operates that can make the difference between a user having an acceptable performance when using the system or an unacceptable performance.
Systems have the capability to run in different ways for different functions and most can be tuned to make a software package can do more in the same period of time.
Example
A client running the Lexis Nexis Artiion software package was getting complaints around month end from the finance team. The system was running unacceptably slowly and causing work to backlog at a critical time of month.
Solution
As the system was running under an Informix Dynamic server database engine a number of configurable parameters could be changed that when implemented changed how the system performed. Database admin work further increased how quickly the system performed. Minor changes to the RAID controller (how the system gets information to / from the hard drives) also yielded performance increases.
Example
A client running Lexis Nexis Arista software under SCO Unix was waiting for case users to complete activities.
Solution
Changes to the SCO kernel allowed resources to be allocated to the areas the system was “starved” of sufficient resources.
The above examples are from some of the Lexis Nexis software packages but all systems can be made to run faster.
